EVE.
Biblical. [Heb. Havah
= "life"]. The name given by Adam
to the first woman "because she was the mother of all living"
(Gen. iii. 20). Usage: America, Australia, England, Ireland, Israel,
Scotland, Wales.
Under her forming hands a
creature grew,
Man-like, but different sex, so lovely fair
That what seemed fair in all the world seemed now
Mean, or in her summed up, in her contained
And in her looks, which from that time infused
Sweetness into my heart unfelt before,
And into all things from her air inspired
The spirit of love and amorous delight.

Grace was in all her steps, heaven in her eye,
In every gesture dignity and love.
Paradise Lost, Bk. viii. (John Milton)
Eve has seldom been
used in England, though old parish registers occasionally show a pair of
twins christened Adam and Eve. (History of Christian Names,
Yonge, 1884)
Eve. From the
Hebrew haovah, "life, or causing life." Arabic, Hawa, or
Heva; Danish, Eva;
Dutch, Eva; Fr., Eve;
Ger., Eva; Gr., Eua, or Eva;
Ita., Eva; Lat., Eva;
Sp., Eva; Sw., Eva.
(The Standard Dictionary of Facts, Ruoff, 1909)
Soon after
Adam's creation, Eve was brought into
being to be his help meet (21, 22). When the pair were placed in the
garden of Eden, they were forbidden to touch or taste the fruit of one
particular tree, the prohibition being designed to test their
obedience. Some time afterwards the "serpent," doubtless
with Satanic aid and guidance, accosted Eve, in the absence of her
husband, and induced her first to entertain unjust suspicions of God, and
then to eat the forbidden fruit. She afterwards persuaded Adam to
act similarly, he thus sharing her guilt and penalty. The result was
the fall of man (iii. 1-24; 2 Cor. xi. 3). After the expulsion of
the delinquents from Paradise, Eve successively became the mother
of Cain, Abel, Seth, with other sons and also daughters (Gen. iv. 1, 2,
25, 26; v. 1-5). She seems to have lived to an advanced age.
The circumstances of her death are unknown. (The Sunday School
Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter, 1894)
