EÁDULF. A
contracted form of Anglo-Saxon Eadwulf
(q.v.), meaning "rich wolf," from Old English ead "happy,
rich," and wulf
"wolf." (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).
.... Edgar king of England is
said to have bestowed Louthian on Keneth king of Scotland as a feudal
territory; but the actions of that Solomon, Cyrus, Romulus,
&c. of the monks are so involved in fable, that it is difficult to
know what is true of them. It is however certain that in the
beginning of the 11th century Eadulf-Cudel, who was earl of
Northumbirland under the k. of England, surrendered to Malcolm II. k. of
Scotland all right or claim he might have to that province... (Geographical
Illustrations of Scottish History, Macpherson, 1796)
