EADWEARD.  Anglo-Saxon name meaning "rich guard," from Old English ead "happy, rich," and weard "guard, ward," hence "happy guardian." (A Compendious Ang.-Sax. and English Dictionary, Bosworth, 1901).  Some render the name "defender of his property."  Modern English, Edward.  Cf. Eadgard.
