French form of German Eberhard
(q.v.), meaning "firm wild boar." It is the same as
Anglo-Saxon Eoforheard.
Also spelled Evrard. (The
Teutonic Name-System, Ferguson, 1864).
Ebrard, viscount of
Chartres, and his wife Hunbergis were the parents of Hugh de Puiset,
viscount of Chartres, and Adelaide the wife of Roger Montgomery the ally
of William the Conqueror. Hugh de Puiset had three sons, Ebrard,
Hugh, and Guy, and a daughter Hunbergis. (Historical Introductions to
