ECGBERCT.  Anglian form of Saxon Ecgbeorht (q.v.), meaning "bright-eyed."  Both forms were used among the Anglo-Saxons.  Other forms include Ecgbert, Ecgbryht.  The modern English form is Egbert.

The Anglian c of the time of Bæda was represented by a Saxon H.  The word berct bright, is of frequent occurrence in his proper names, as Bercta, Bertctfrid, Berctgils, Bercthun, Berctred, Berctuald, Cudberct, Heriberct, Huætberct.  The same was also freely used in Saxon names, but in them the C is H; Anglian berct is Saxon briht or beorht: Brihthelm, Brihtnoþ, Brihtric, Brihtwold, Brihtwulf, Ecgbriht, Cuðbriht.
