EGLAF. Old
English name, cognate with Old Norse Eileifr
(q.v.), meaning "ever-heir" or, "ever-relic." (The
Crawford Collection of Early Charters and Documents Now in the Bodleian,
Napier-Stevenson, 1895)
The Battle at the Helga.
This battle is not mentioned in the Abingdon and Worcester
Chronicles. Peterborough, followed by Canterbury, places it in
1025. No enemies but Swedes are spoken of, and their commanders
are called (by the English) Ulf and Eglaf... (The History of the
Norman Conquest of England, Freeman, v.1, 1877)
