EIRIK. Norwegian.
From Old Norse Eiríkr (q.v.), meaning "always
mighty."
Eirik (Erik): den altid mægtige.
(Oldnorsk Eirikr. Ei: altid. Rik: mægtige).
(Norske døbenavne, med deres
betydning og oprindelse, Støylen, 1887).
... The
first syllable is that which we call aye to the present day, the
word that lies at the root of the Latin vum, the German ewig, and our
own ever. The second syllable is from the same source as ragn; it is
he who executes judgment, the ruler or king, the same word as the Indian rajah, and the Latin
rex. It was reiks in Gothic, rich in old
German, ryce in Anglo-Saxon. Ei-rik is thus Ever King.
(History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
... In front of the standards of
the host of Ivar stood Adils the Gay, from Upsalir; he was not in the
Fylkings. With him were the champions
Sigvaldi, who had come with eleven ships; Tryggvy and Tvividil, each of
whom had come with twelve dragon-ships; Lsir, who had only one skeid,
a most beautiful and formidable craft, entirely manned by berserks; Eirik,
from Helsing, who had come with a large dragon-ship, manned also by
berserks... (Ivar the Viking, Chaillu, 1893)
