ELDRED.  Modern English form of Anglo-Saxon Ealdred (q.v.), meaning "aged counsellor," from Old English eald "ancient, old," and rǽd "advice, counsel."  Ældred appears in Domesday. (British Family Names, Barber, 1903).  Also see Aldred, Ealdræd, Eldrid, and the feminine Eldreda.  Usage: America, England.
