ELFHERE.  Anglo-Saxon Ælfhere (q.v.), meaning "army elf."

"In this year (975) there were great disturbances throughout England; and Elfhere the ealdorman ordered the demolition of many monasteries which king Edgar had erewhile ordered the holy bishop Ethelwold to establish.  And at the same time the great earl Oslac was banished from England... "  There are hints, especially in the life of St. Oswald of York, that Elfhere's anti-monastic policy was connected with a certain amount of spoliation of the abbey lands, which were probably in some measure distributed among his followers...
