EMRYS. Welsh
name meaning "ever-living, immortal." Equivalent to Latin Ambrosius
(q.v.).
... "It is manifest there
came not to Gododin, in behalf of the Britons, a hero from a distant
region, who was better than Cynon (the Prince)." Taking
Cynon (the Prince) to apply to Eidiol, it is clear that this passage very
aptly describes Ambrosius Aurelianus, whose usual residence was
Brittany. (4) The very peculiar name for a Roman, Ambrosius,
equivalent to the Cymric Emrys, gives us great reason to place
faith in the conjecture of Mr. Davies, viz., that Aurelianus gained the cognomen
of "Ambrosius," or "Emrys" from his successful
defence of the Cor, or Gwaith, Emrys, i.e.,
Stonehenge. Mr. Davies thus puts it. "The very same
actions are ascribed to Eidiol and Emrys (Ambrosius), such as burying
the British nobles, erecting their monument at Ambresbury, taking
Hengist prisoner at Caer Gynan, or Conisborough, and causing him
to be beheaded. If this Eidiol was not Ambrosius, we must consider
him as the great agent and counsellor of that prince, to whom his
actions were consequently ascribed."... (Stonehenge, Viewed by
the Light of Ancient History and Modern Observation, Gidley, 1877).
