EOCHAID. A
variant
of Irish Eochaidh (q.v.),
meaning "a horseman or knight."
Several Eochaids were kings of Scotland, but they are grievously confused
by Latinity. Another Eochaid has, by the capricious fancy of
Scotland, been transmitted to us as Achaius;
and some appear as
Eugenius!
(History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
EOCHAIDH, pronounced Eochy or
Eohy, an old Irish name signifying a horseman or knight; from each
or eoch, a steed. According to the Annals of Ireland it has
been Anglicized Achy, and Latinised
Eochadius, Achadius, and Achaius.
(Praenomina, Charnock, 1882)
