EOGAN.
Irish name, cognate with Cymric Owen
(q.v.), meaning "young warrior." Also spelled Eoghan.
Eogan mac
Durthacht (also Derthacht): "Eogan,"
anglicised "Ewen,"
cognate with Cymric Owen. "Durthacht" "is
probably of the same origin as the reduplicate doruthethaig,
"deperdidit," so that mac Durthacht would seem to have
had much the same meaning as ... 'son of Perdition or
Destruction'."—"Hib. Lect.," p. 142. He was a
type of darkness and treachery, and slew the sons of Usnech. He
was king of Farney. (Fled Bricrend: the Feast of Bricriu,
Henderson, 1899).
