EPARNA. Assyrian
form of Persian Hyphernes
(q.v.).
A prince or king of Patusarra in Media. He was conquered and taken
captive to Nineveh, by Esarhaddon, king of Assyria. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
The name may mean "illustrious." (American Journal of
Philology,
Gildersleeve, v.25, 1904)
... Esarhaddon (B.C. 680-668)
mentions his victories over two chiefs name Sitirparna and Eparna.
The first of these is either cithrafarna = Τι(σ)σαφέρνης, or
khsathra-farna;
the second seems = Old Persian hu-farna = Avestan hu-hvarenanh
"having brilliant lustre", "illustrious".
Similarly Avarparna = hvare-farna "bright as the sun" omits
initial Old Persian h = Aryan s. (American Journal of
