ERMENIGELD. Gothic
name composed of the Teutonic elements ermen "universal"
or "public," and gild "pledge," hence "public
pledge." (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884) Also spelled Erminigeld,
Ermingild,
Hermangild,
Hermengild.
Eormengild is an
Anglo-Saxon form.
Ermenigeld rebelled against his
father Liobagiltis in 582. The most probable cause of this rebellion
was his mother Goisvintha. He married a Catholic wife named
Ingunda, and her uncle Leander being the bishop of Seville, persuaded
Ermenigeld to become a Catholic. But Goisvintha was a bigoted
Arian, and once she grabbed her daughter-in-law by the hair, and dragged
her to an Arian priest for baptism. Ermenigeld became angry at his
mother and on account of this he quarreled with his father. (Guthones,
Rackus, 1929)
