ERVIGIUS. Latinized
form of Gothic Erwig (q.v.),
meaning "army warrior." The name of a Visigothic king of
Spain.
2
Ervigius is said, I known not on what authority, by Galliard (Hist.
de la Rivalite de la France et de l'Espagne, i. 58), to have been
the grandson of the son of that son of Errmengild and Ingunthis who was
taken to Constantinople after his father's execution. He was in
all probability no Goth, but a true Graeculus or low Roman, the son of
one Ardobastes; and he was born, it is said, at either Byzantium or
Carthagena. He is hardly entitled to the Gothic, albeit most
evil-sounding, name of Erwig; and he has been usually spoken of by
modern writers as Ervigius. But as he was an adopted Goth
long before he was a usurping king, and more especially as the last
Roman or Graeco-Roman had left Spain before he was born, it is scarcely
worth while to be inconsistent for the sake of a fancy, and I have
treated him as an Erwig... (A History of Spain, Burke, v.1, 1895)
