EUGENES (Εὐγενής).  Older form of Greek Eugenios (q.v.), derived from the word eugenes, signifying to be "well born"; which is the common notion of nobility. 

    Εὐγενής (Eugenes), well born, was a very old Greek author; but Eugenios was the more usual form in classical times, and was carried on as Eugenius by the Romans. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
