FRANCO. Italian
form of French Franc (q.v.), meaning "free
man," from Teutonic Frang ("free lord"). (History
of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
Bolognese,
Franco, Franco of Bologna, an illuminator mentioned by Oderisi (in
Circle I of Purgatory) as being a better artist than himself, Purg. xi.
82-4. Little is known of Franco; Vasari, who possessed some of his
drawings, says (in his Vita di Giotto) that he was employed,
together with Oderisi (whose pupil he is said to have been), by Boniface
VIII in the Vatican library, where he illuminated many of the MSS.
He appears to have been still living in 1310. (Concise Dictionary of
Proper Names and Notable Matters in the Works of Dante, Toynbee,
1914)
