GEIRTHRUD.
Old Norse name meaning "spear maid," from gjer "spear" and the
feminine termination trud "girl, maid."
The chief
favourite amongst the spear titles seems to have been once a Valkyr name
Gertrud, or Geirthrud, the
spear maid; for, alas! the pretty interpretation that has caused so many
damsels of late to bear it, as meaning all truth, is utterly
untenable, unless they will regard themselves as allegorically constant
battle-maids, armed with the spear of Ithuriel. (History of Christian
