GULLA.  A Norwegian contraction of Old Norse Guðlaug, meaning "divine liquor." (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).  According to Edmondston, it should be rendered "a young woman."  See note below.  Cf. Babylonian Gula.

    GULLA, pronounced liquid; a young woman who assists at the christening of a child, S.; isl. gillia, a young woman. (An Etymological Glossary of the Shetland & Orkney Dialect, Edmondston, 1866).
