    Galen [Lat. Glaudius Galenus; Gr. Κλαύδιος Γαληνός; Fr. Galien; It. Galieno,] a celebrated Greek medical writer and pagan philosopher, born at Pergamus, (or Pergamum,) in Mysia, in 131 A.D.  His death is variously dated from 200 to 210 A.D. (Universal Pronouncing Dictionary of Biography and Mythology, Thomas, 1901).
