GAVIN. The
Scottish form of old Celtic Gobannonos
(q.v.), meaning "blacksmith." (Prænomina, R.S. Charnock, 1882). It
is the Scottish name for Gawain
(q.v.), old Welsh Gwalchmai
(q.v.), the "hawk of battle." Irish Goban.
Manx Gawen. Welsh Gofannon.
Usage: America, England,
Scotland, Wales.
His name,
whether as Walwyn, Gawain, or Gavin, was popular in England and Scotland
in the middle ages; and in the last-mentioned shape named the
high-spirited bishop of Dunkeld, the one son of old Bell the Cat, who
could "pen a line," and who did so to such good purpose when
"he gave rude Scotland Virgil's page." Nor is Gavin by
any means extinct in Scotland. (History of Christian Names, Yonge,
1884)
