whether as Walwyn, Gawain, or Gavin, was popular in England and Scotland
in the middle ages; and in the last-mentioned shape named the
high-spirited bishop of Dunkeld, the one son of old Bell the Cat, who
could "pen a line," and who did so to such good purpose when
"he gave rude Scotland Virgil's page." Nor is Gavin by
