GEORGE. English
form of Greek Georgios
(q.v.), meaning "farmer,
husbandman." In Wales it often represents Urien
(heavenly). (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).
Usage: America, Australia, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales.
George a-Green. The
subject of an English prose romance entitled "The History of George
a-Green, Pindar of the town of Wakefield." In its MS. form,
it is supposed to be as old as the days of Queen Elizabeth. "Pindar"
is a corruption of pinner, or penner, that is, keeper of
the public pen or pound for the confinement of estrays. (A Dictionary
of the Noted Names of Fiction, Wheeler, 1889)
