GEORGE.  English form of Greek Georgios (q.v.), meaning "farmer, husbandman."  In Wales it often represents Urien (heavenly). (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).  Usage:  America, Australia, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales.

George a-Green.  The subject of an English prose romance entitled "The History of George a-Green, Pindar of the town of Wakefield."  In its MS. form, it is supposed to be as old as the days of Queen Elizabeth.  "Pindar" is a corruption of pinner, or penner, that is, keeper of the public pen or pound for the confinement of estrays. (A Dictionary of the Noted Names of Fiction, Wheeler, 1889)
