GIAFAR (جعفر). The
same as Arabic Gafar (q.v.),
meaning "escort," and "guard." (English-Arabic
Dictionary, Steingass, 1882). Also spelled Giaffar
and Jaffar.
Giafar, or, more correctly, Jaffar,
the Barmecide, vizier to Haroun Alrashid, both in historical fact
and in the fiction of the Arabian Nights' Entertainment. He
accompanied that caliph in all his nightly rambles and hair-breadth
adventures until his fall from power in 802. (Heroes and Heroines of
