GILDAS.  British name cognate with French Gilles (q.v.), Irish Giolla (q.v.), meaning "with the ægis," i.e. "a disciple, a servant."  Gildas occurs in Bede and in the story of Kulhwch Gildas appears as Gilla. (Manx Names, Moore, 1906).  Some render such names "pledge" and even "hostage."
