| GILS. Old
Norse name derived from Teutonic gils, meaning
"pledge." Some would make it "hostage." Though gils is an extremely common
termination in Northern names, almost all the names where it is a
commencement are Frankish or German. It is very obviously cognate
with French Gilles (q.v.),
and Irish Giolla (q.v.),
which has always been Latinized Ægidius
(q.v.), and may be rendered "with the ægis," i.e. "a disciple, a
servant." (History of Christian Names,
Yonge, 1884).
