GIRFLET. French.
The same as Giflet and Griflet,
all of which are probably from gifle, gifler, or giroflée,
meaning "a slap in the
face" "a box on the ear."
According to Rees,
the original name of the Arthurian character Girflet le Petit is,
most probably, Eiddilic
Corr (feeble dwarf).
GIFLE, n.f.
slap in the face; box on the ear.
GIFLER, v.s. to slap; to box the ears of.
...
GIROFLÉE, n.f. 1. (bot.) gillilflower,
stock; 2.) box on the ear; slap in the face.
(A New French-English
General Dictionary, Spiers, 1908).
... In Malory's Le Morte
Darthur, Arthur is able to walk no more, and the death of the
grievously wounded Lucans is caused by carrying his king. The part
of Girflet is taken in Darthur by Bedwere, the former's name not
being even mentioned. Both Darthur and the Prose-Lancelot
agree that Arthur asks Bedwere (Girflet) to throw his sword into a lake,
that Bedwere (Girflet) deceives Arthur twice before carrying out this
wish, and then sees a hand rise out of the water, receive the sword,
brandish and disappear with it... (Le Morte Darthur, Studies,
Malory-Lang, 1903)
