GODERIC. Anglo-Saxon
name meaning "divine king," from Old English god "god," and
rice "mighty, powerful, rich, wealthy."
... Goderic—a very old
word, which, strange to say, was, at Cambrai, equivalent to fainéant,
or 'ne'er do weel,' it must be supposed in allusion to some particularly
discreditable Goderic, as everywhere else it signifies divine ruler. Our
own St. Goderic was an Anglo-Saxon abbot, and the name, which means
divine rule, grew so common among the English, that the Norman nobles
called Henry I. and his Queen, Godric and
Godiva, in derision of the
lady's English blood. Goderic does, indeed, swarm in Domesday
Book, and has left the surname Goodrich. (History of Christian Names,
Yonge, 1884)
