Origin of the name GORDIAN.
Etymology of the name GORDIAN.
Meaning of the baby name GORDIAN.

GORDIAN.  From Roman Gordianus (q.v.), meaning "of Gordius."  Due to folk etymology, this name has become an adjective, meaning "difficult, intricate," and this meaning is sometimes applied also to the name.  See below.

Gordian, gord'yan, adj. intricate; difficult.  [The Gordian knot was a knot so tied by Gordius, king of Phrygia, that no one could untie it.] (Chambers's Etymological Dictionary of the English Language, Findlater, 1904)

... The Roman people acknowledged in the features of the younger Gordian the resemblance of Scipio Africanus, recollected with pleasure that his mother was the grand-daughter of Antoninus Pius, and rested the public hope on those latent virtues which had hitherto, as they fondly imagined, lain concealed in the luxurious indolence of a private life... (The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Gibbon, 1914)
