GORLASSAR. Arthurian.
An epithet of Uther Pendragon. In translating the Druidic poem containing
Uther's epithet, David Nash (Taliesin, 1858) supposes the word gorlassar ("extremely
blue") to be an error
for gorlaisar ("shrill-voiced."). But Rhys sees no
error in the poem.
... It is further inevitable
that we should identify with Bran, or Bran's Head, a divinity called the
Wonderful Head, in Welsh, Uthr Ben and Uthr Ben-dragon, to whom allusion
has been made elsewhere, but here we wish to draw attention only to one
point of similarity between Urien and Uthr Ben, namely, as to
complexion: the Taliesin poem about Uthr Ben makes him sing his
own elegy, and in it he describes himself as ardu, "black, dark, or
dusky." He also represents himself called gorlassar, which
seems to have denoted a dark blue or livid colour, and it is twice used
in connection with Urien, once of his person, and once of the spear
wielded by him to despatch a foe. (Studies in Arthurian Legend,
Rhys, 1891)
