GREGORIUS.  Latin form of Greek Gregorios (q.v.), meaning "watchman."  The Seventh Gregorius, he who bore that title instead of his baptismal Hildebrand, made his fold into a fortress, and so extended the honours of his papal appellation, that it has been borne by no less than sixteen occupants of the chair of St. Peter. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).
