GWALCHAVED. Arthurian.
A knight of the Round Table, brother of Gwalchmai
(Gawain). It is an
ancient
Welsh form of Galahad
(q.v.), meaning "hawk of summer," form Welsh gwalch "hawk" and hâv/hâf
"summer." (The History of Religions, Hopkins, 1918; , Studies
in Arthurian Legend, Rhys, 1891; Selections
from Sir Thomas Malory's Le morte Darthur, Swiggett, 1911)
... there can be little
question as to other personages who surround Arthur both in the earlier
and later legends. Myrddin as Merlin; March as King Mark; Gwalchaved
as Sir Galahad; Kai as Sir Kay; and Gwenhwyvar as Guinevere have
obviously been directly taken over from Welsh story... (The Mythology
of Ancient Britain and Ireland, Squire, 1906)
