| GYGES (Γύγης). An
officer of Candaules, king of Lydia; he murdered his master, married his
wife, and usurped the throne, thus founding the dynasty of the Mermnadae.
He reigned from B.C. 687 to 653 (so Gelzer), and was the co-temporary of
Archilochus, Simonides of Amorgos, Terpander, and the Homer of Euphorion.
In consequence of a dream he sent embassies and tribute to Assurbanipal,
including two captive Kimmerian chiefs. His aid enabled Psammitikhus
to revolt successfully from Assyria; but the Kimmerians soon afterwards
invaded Lydia again, and he was slain in battle. His son, Ardys,
again submitted to Assyria. Gyges was a benefactor of the Delphic
oracle, and the old folk-tale of underground treasures and a ring which
rendered the owner invisible attached itself to him. He is called Gugu
in the Cuneiform inscriptions, and Gog
in the Old Testament.
(An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper,
1876).
