GOMER (גּׄמֶר). f.
[Hebrew = "glowing coals" (?)].
The daughter of Diblaim, and wife of Hosea the prophet (Hosea
i. 3).GOMER (גּׄמֶר). m.
[Hebrew, from Assyrian Gimirrai = "Cimmerians" (Sayce).
See the article. Cf. also Armenian Gamir =
"Cappadocia" (Gesenius)].
The eldest
son of Japheth and the father of Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah (Gen.
x. 2, 3; 1 Chron. i. 5, 6). In Ezek. xxxviii. 6 he is associated
with Togarmah. He was probably the ancestor of the Cimmerians of
classical history. They came from the Crimea and the regions
beyond the Caucasus, and threatened the Assyrian Empire, but were
defeated by Esarhaddon. Turning westward they overran part of Asia
Minor, fighting more than one battle with Gyges, king of Lydia, the
Scripture Gog, whom they killed. They were afterwards driven out
of Lydia by Alyattes. They are generally considered to have been
identical with the Cimbri of Roman times, and the Cymry of Welsh Cambria
and even Cumberland still preserve the memory of their name. (The
Sunday School Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter, 1894).
