HELENE (Ἑλένη).
A feminine form of Greek Helenos,
meaning "light." It is also
possible that it may be contracted from Helenas, "the
ship-destroying." (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884). Usage: America,
England, France (Hélène), Germany (Helène), Greece.
Frederike Helene Unger, was the
wife of printer and wood-engraver Johann Friedrich Unger. She was
born at Berlin in 1751, and was distinguished for her talents and
accomplishments. She published several popular novels, one of
which, entitled "Julia Grünthal, the History of a Boarding-School
Girl," ("Julchen Grünthal, eine Pensioinsgeschichte,"
1784,) is particularly admired. Her "Confessions of a
Beautiful Soul" ("Bekentnisse einer schönen Seele," 1806)
also deserves especial mention. She died in 1813. (Universal
Pronouncing Dictionary of Biography and Mythology, Thomas, v.2,
1915)
