HERZELOYDE. Arthurian. In Eschenbach's German poem, Parzival,
this is the name of the hero's mother, either signifying
"heart's-sorrow," or from a French form of the Welsh
word arglwydes,
meaning "lady, domina."
... Proper names are supplied;
Gahmuret for the father of the hero, Herzeloyde for his mother
(apparently a romantic formation signifying Heart's-sorrow),... (King
Arthur and the Table Round, Chretien-Newell, 1911)
THE HERO'S
MOTHER: Name.—Only two of the seven versions give the name: Sir
Perceval of Galles, Acheflour;
Parzival, Herzeloyde.
Rhys says: "Now Herzeloyde is clearly nothing but the Welsh
word arglwydes, "lady, domina," applied to her in the Welsh
original, drawn upon by some one of Wolfram's French predecessors in the
treatment of the story."—Arth. Leg., p. 123. Golther
(op. cit., 206, note) considers "Acheflour" a garbling
of Crestien's "Blancheflour." (Sir Percival of Galles,
Griffith, 1911)
