| HESTIA (Ἑστία). In
Greek mythology, the goddess of the "hearth," or, rather, of the
fire burning on the hearth. She is called Vesta by the Romans.
She was one of the twelve great divinities of the Greeks, a daughter of
Saturn (Cronus) and Rhea, and, according to common tradition, was the
first-born of Rhea, and consequently the first of the children swallowed
by Saturn (Cronus). This is also the name of one of the Hesperides,
guardians of the golden apples which Ge (Earth) gave to Juno (Hera) at her
marriage with Jupiter (Zeus). (A New Classical Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography, Mythology,
&c., Smith-Anthon, 1895).
