HAAKON.
Norwegian. The same as Old
Norse Haaken (q.v.), meaning
"high kin," from haa "high" and kyn
"kin." Also see Haagan,
and Hacon.
King Eirik
Magnusson had no sons, and his brother, Duke Haakon, succeeded him on
the throne. Haakon was not in Bergen when the king died, as his
marriage to Euphemia, daughter of Gunther of Arnstein, Count of Rupin,
had just been celebrated at Oslo, but when he received the news, he
hastened to Bergen, where he was proclaimed king, August 10, 1299... (History
of the Norwegian People, Gjerset, v.1, 1915)
