HACKEL.  Variant form of Swiss Häcke (q.v.), which may be a form of Danish Hagan (q.v.), meaning "spear, weapon."  But Yonge thinks it more likely to be related to Gothic Egica (q.v.), rendered "formidable," or "terrible."  Both names, however, go back to the same Teutonic root eg/ec "terror." (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).  Usage: Austria, Germany, Switzerland.
