| HAR-MACHIS.
Harmachis. A name given in Egyptian mythology to the solar deity Ra, when in
the horizon. The setting sphynx was the symbol of this deity; and
the great sphynx in front of the Pyramid of Cheops was in the earliest
ages wrought out of the rock, in honour of the god. This statue was
already an old one in the time of the IVth dynasty, and it was
subsequently restored by Thothmes III. of the XVIIIth dynasty, who erected
a temple between its paws.
(An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
