HERIOLD.  Dutch and German.  The same as Northern Harald (q.v.), Old Norse Haraldr (q.v.), Teutonic Harivald (q.v.), meaning "army wielder" or "warrior power."

... Louis the Pious interfered in Danish affairs, and supported the Danish prince, Heriold, against Gottrik's sons.  He succeeded in giving a firm footing in Denmark to Heriold, who became his vassal and embraced Christianity with all his family.  Heriold received a countship from the emperor, and his son and nephew were educated at the Frankish court.  His adversaries evidently made this a pretext for attacking the Franks again.  We read of a landing upon the Flemish coast in 820... (History of the People of the Netherlands, Blok, v.1, 1898).
