HERMENIGILDO. Gothic.
Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. An old name still in use, which
Yonge renders "public pledge." (History of Christian
Names, Yonge, 1884). It has many forms and
spellings. See Ermenigeld,
and Anglo-Saxon Eormengild.
"...John of Biclar (Roncall.
ii. 391) speaks of the revolt of Eormengild against his father and his
flight to the Imperial province in southern Spain as 'Hermenigildo ad
rempublicam commigrante.'" (Western Europe in the Eighth Century
& Onward, Freeman, 1904)
... Wet weather detained us at
Tripoli, where we were treated with the greatest kindness by the Padre Hermenigildo,
until the afternoon of the 9th of November, when we set out and proceeded
as far as the nahr El-Bered, or Cold River; where we passed the night in a
khan, a place appropriated to the use of travellers, which Maudrell very
well describes in the first and second pages of his book. (Travels in
Egypt and Nubia, Syria, and the Holy Land, Irby-Mangles, 1844)
