HILARION (Ιλαρίων).
Greek
name derived from ιλαρός
(hilaros), meaning "cheerful." Also spelled Ilarion.
In use in Russia (Иларион).
(History
of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884). It has the Latin form, Hilarius.
... It is related... how, on
one occasion, he (Epiphanius) rebuked the ascetic zeal of St. Hilarion
by a word of genuine evangelical spirit. Hilarion, at a
common meal, had refused to partake of some fish which was offered him,
alleging that he never partook of anything that had life.
"And I," said Epiphanius, "since I commenced monastic
life have never suffered any one to go to rest with any ground of
offence on his mind against me." "Thy rule, my
father," replied Hilarion, "is better than mine."
