HOGNI.  A Danish form of Old Norse Hogen (q.v.), probably meaning "hook," from ögn ( stalk, stem, spike).  Also spelled Hogne.  Hogni and Hogen are just two of many similar names that have been used for the villain who killed Siegfried in the German epic The Nibelungen Lied. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).
