HRÓDÚLFR. Old
Norse name meaning "famous wolf," from hrothr
"fame" and ulfr "wolf."
Rodulf, or "Hrodulfr,"
is a known Norwegian name. "Rod-," or "Hrod,"
is the same as the "modern Norwegian" "ros" (i.e.,
praise), and means probably here renowned. (In Northern Mists,
Nansen, 1911)
"Hrodulfr (or Hrolfr)
setti stein nordr á Gaudi eftir Gudmund, brodursun sinn; druknadi
hann thar Oværfadi." Rodolf (or
Rolf) raised this stone,
north on Gauth, after Gudamund, the son of his brother. He was
drowned there. Ovair carved (the inscription). (Archaeologia
Cambrensis, v.7, 1860)
