German name meaning "famous spear," from Teutonic hruod
"fame, praise," and gar "spear." Also see

There seems
to have been a veritable Hruodgar living in the time of Pepin, who
married a lady whose father's name was Hector, whence it was taken for
granted that she descended from Hector of Troy. Therefore the
House of Este bore the white eagle in their coat of arms, because it was
said he of Troy had a shield azure with a silver eagle! (History of
