Meaning of the baby name HYWEL.

HYWEL.  Arthurian.  Welsh name meaning "sharp-sighted."  Hywel ap Caw, brother of Gildas, was killed by King Arthur, or as some say, by his orders. (Archaeologia Cambrensis, Jan., 1876)

HOWEL, HOEL, or HYWEL (n. pr. v.), à hy and wêl, i.e., sharp-sighted.  There have been several famous men of this name.  Hywel, by some made the same with Huw or Hugh.

Howel wyd Huw o Ladin
Haelaf o'r gwyr, heiliwr gwin.

(Celtic Remains, Morris, 1878).

... Hywel-Dha, or the Good, reigned in the tenth century, and was famous for having gone to Rome to study law, by which he so profited as afterwards to draw up the famous code that has thrown so much light on the manners of the Cambrian mountaineers, the order of precedence in the king's household, and even the price of animals.  He signs King Athelstan's charter as Hoel-Subregulus, or under king.
Hywel was a name in frequent use among the Welsh princes, and "highborn Hoel's harp" was frequently sounded, for various bards were so called. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
