HELLE. m. Danish contraction of Old
Norse Helgi, meaning "holy."
(History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
... Thinking that there was thus
sufficient provision made against false accusations by unscrupulous men,
he lifted up his arms against Britain, and attacked and slew in battle
its king, Hame, the father of Helle, who was a most noble
youth... (The First Nine Books of the Danish History of Saxo
Grammaticus, Elton, 1906)
HELLE (Ἕλλη). f. Greek name of the sister of
Phryxus, probably from the same root as Helenos
(q.v.), ele, meaning "bright, light."
Helle, a daughter of
Athamus and Nephele, sister of Phryxus. She fled from her father's
house with her brother, to avoid the cruel oppression of her
mother-in-law Ino. According to some accounts she was carried
through the air on a golden ram which her mother had received from
Neptune, and in her passage she became giddy, and fell from her seat
into that part of the sea which from her received the name of Hellespont.
Others say that she was carried on a cloud, or rather in a ship, from
which she fell into the sea and was drowned... (A Classical
Dictionary, Lemprière, 1822)
