IGRAINE. Arthurian.
The mother of king Arthur; the wife of Uther Pendragon. It
is a form of Welsh Eigyr
(q.v.), meaning "the virgin." Other forms include Eigr,
Igerne,
Ygerne,
and Ygraine.
... In Book I of Morte d'Arthur,
Uther Pendragon, King of England, sends for the Duke of Cornwall, whose
wife, Igraine, he loves. He assumes the duke's shape, and
visits Igraine. The duke is killed in battle against the
king, when he marries Igraine. Arthur is the fruit of their
marriage. The child after its birth is reared by Sir Ector and his
wife. Two years after Arthur's birth King Uther dies.
Merlin, through his magic power, makes the dead Uther speak, commanding
that Arthur his son may succeed to the throne... (A Dictionary of
Medieval Romance and Romance Writers, Spence, 1913)
