IMOGINE.
The same as Imogen
(q.v.), probably meaning "last
born," from omega, the "last" letter of the Greek
alphabet, and genes "born." Also see Imagina,
Imogene, Innogen,
Inogene, and Omogene.
Shakespeare's Cymbeline is the only instance we have of this
name occurring in English literature, but there are a few cases of
Imogine, and Imagina seems to be not unknown in Germany.
The lady Imogine is the heroine in C.R. Maturin's
tragedy of Bertram; and Imogine is the heroine of M.G. Lewis's
ballad Alonzo the Brave and the fair Imogine. (Girls'
Christian Names, Swan, 1905)
