IO (Ιώ).
Greek name meaning "the moon."
... Io, the daughter of Inachus,
was changed by Hera into a cow... Io was priestess of Hera, and is
represented as the cow-goddess Hera... The Pelasgian moon-goddess Io
continued to be the old name of the moon at the religious mysteries at
Argos... No doubt Io, the later Hera, had at an earlier age, besides
cow-horns, a cow-face. Hera, with her old moon-name Io, had a
celebrated temple on the site of Byzantium, which city was founded by
her daughter Keroessa... (Archaeologia
Aeliana, Society of Antiquaries, v.45, 1877).
